Our Beliefs

ABOUT US

Courage Through Christ embraces the following statements of truth. While the Bible is our all-sufficient rule for faith and practice. The following statements are reflections of our fundamental, biblical teachings.

The One True God

We believe there is one true and living God who is self-existent and exists eternally and equally in three persons: the Father, the Son, and Holy Spirit.  (Matthew 28:19-20; Colossians 2:9 Deuteronomy 6:4; Isaiah 43:10, 11, Luke 3:22).

Jesus

Jesus Christ is the Son of God. He is equal with the Father and the Holy Spirit. Jesus lived a sinless human life and offered Himself as the perfect sacrifice for the sins of all people by dying on the cross. He rose from the dead on the third day to demonstrate His power over sin and death. He ascended into heaven and will return to earth to reign as King. (Matthew 1:22-23; Romans 1:3-4; Corinthians 15:3-4; Hebrews 4:14-15)

The Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity. The Holy Spirit was constantly spoken of and promised by Jesus. The Holy Spirit lives in every Christian from the moment of authentic conversion to indwell, infill, enlighten, empower, lead, guide, correct, convict, and comfort their lives. (John 14:16-18; Ephesians 5:18; Romans 8:15; Acts 1:8)

The Bible

We believe what the Bible says about itself, which is that it is inspired by God. It is the filter of truth. It is a collection of writings by human authors who were under the authority and guidance of the Holy Spirit. It is to be interpreted according to its context and purpose and when “rightly divided” it is the ultimate authority for our faith, our lives, and the practices of our church. (Matthew 22:29; 2 Timothy 3:15-16; Romans 15:4)

Salvation

Salvation is God’s free gift to humanity but as is the case with any gift, it must be received or accepted. The way we receive/accept this gift is only by the repentance to God for our activities of sin, trusting in the death, burial, resurrection, and ascension of Jesus Christ and the spiritual regeneration and renewing or our mind, body and soul through the Holy Spirit. (1 Timothy 2:5; Romans 10:9)

The Church

The church is the body of Christ, the habitation of God through the Holy Spirit, with divine appointments for the fulfillment of her mission to win the world for Christ. Jesus Christ is the head of the church, which is composed of all humanity, living and dead, who have been joined to Him through saving faith (Matthew 16:18; Ephesians 1:22, 23; 2:22; Hebrews 12:23). According to the Scriptures the church exists to magnify and exalt God in worship, to train and instruct believers in their discipleship, to minister to the needs of its members, community, and the world, to encourage and develop the Christian fellowship of its members, and to equip its members to evangelize the world and spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ (Acts 2:41-47).

Generosity

We believe that tithes, offerings, and alms are God’s financial plan for the support of His work. (Malachi 3:10; Matthew 23:23; 2 Corinthians 9:6-12)

Discipline

We believe that discipline is a gift from Christ given to His church to promote its health and productivity. (Matthew 18:15-20; Proverbs 19:18)

Fellowship

We believe in The Assembly of the Believers is foundational to the Christian for the sharing of God given gifts and talents for the benefit of the Church and the community at large for the objective of changing the world and lives. That under no circumstance are we to completely disengage from the body of believers (the church universal). We can disengage from religious zealotry, fanaticism and or the four walls of a local institution but as we believe, the church universal is the body of Christ who are comprised of the body of believers and not simply an institution, we are to never completely disengage from the people of God. (Hebrews 10:25, 1 Corinthians 12:27-28)

The Ordinances of the Church

There are two ordinances of the church – Baptism and Holy Communion (Eucharist). The ordinance of baptism (optimally by immersion) is commanded in the Scriptures. All who repent and believe that Christ is Savior and Lord are to be baptized as they are physically able and have opportunity. (Matthew 28:19, 20; Acts 8:26-38). Baptism is an outward sign of an inward spiritual renewal and rebirth. Therefore, those who are baptized are declaring to the world that they have died with Christ and that they also have been raised with Him to walk in the newness of life (Acts 10:47, 48; Romans 6:4). Holy Communion (Eucharist), also known as the Lord’s Supper, consisting of broken bread, the body of Jesus Christ, and the fruit of the vine, the shed blood of our Lord and Savior, is the symbol expressing our sharing the divine nature of our Lord Jesus Christ (II Peter 1:4); a memorial of His suffering and death (I Corinthians 11:26); our fellowship and communion with all believers (Ephesians 4:4-6); and our prophetic expectation of His second coming (I Corinthians 11:26). We accept these large areas of doctrinal teaching on which, historically, there has been general agreement among all true Christians. We desire to allow for freedom of conviction on doctrinal matters, provided that any interpretation is based on the Bible alone, and that no such interpretation shall become an issue that hinders the ministry to which God has called us.
